In my career over the past 30 years, I
have been involved many times with the sale or divestment of businesses.
Originally
it was in my corporate life where I assisted companies small and large
to make the transition from one owner or management team to new
ownership. The reasons were many and varied and the outcomes not always
as smooth as all the parties would all have wanted, due to lack of a
specific template or plan to follow. The human issues required careful
consideration and were in many cases badly handled by the families
involved.
Over the past ten
years I have on many occasions been asked
to give advice to business owners on
succession issues that come with
my work on Professionalising Management. I
found that the Accountants and Law firms
where I sought assistance
in many cases had less idea or experience than I had. Putting a
total package together became very difficult and there was not a lot of
quality information for such an important decision.
However, for the last five years I have been working with Family and
